What exactly is Google Pay?
- Google Pay is a digital wallet associated with your Google account. You can use it to send or request money from friends (similar to Venmo), pay for things in apps, and use it at a store or restaurant with an Android phone or watch running Wear OS. The real reason to use Google Pay, however, may be that it is faster and more secure than using a physical debit or credit card.
- Google Pay, which replaced Android Pay and Google Wallet in 2018, works without sending your actual card numbers to stores and restaurants. In essence, your credit and debit card information is securely stored on Google’s servers, and rather than transmitting your card numbers,
- As a substitute, Google Pay employs a token known as a virtual account number.
- Google has expanded the app’s functionality over time. Membership cards, gift cards, transit cards, and even promotional offers for specific goods and services can all be used and stored.
- But, before we can enjoy all of the benefits of Google Pay, we must first set it up.
How to Use Google Pay at Retail Locations, Restaurants, and ATMs ?
Look for the wireless payment logo at a register to use Google Pay in a store or restaurant. It’s the one with a hand holding a square piece of cheese over a plate of curved hotdogs varying in length. When you see the symbol, unlock your phone and hold it inches away from the register, and Google Pay will open with your default card. Google Pay, like Apple Pay, connects to a register via NFC.
While paying with your phone is novel, Google Pay can do so much more. You can use it to withdraw money from an ATM using your phone. If you have a Chase debit card linked to Google Pay, for example, you can withdraw money from a Chase ATM equipped with a contactless reader. Of course, you must still enter your debit card PIN number.
Google Pay can now accept loyalty and gift cards
You can add loyalty cards and gift cards to your Google Pay Wallet. For instance, I included my AMC Stubs A-List card. However, a wide range of merchants, from Starbucks and Walgreens to Ikea and airlines such as United, Delta, and American, are supported.
1. Open the Google Pay app and tap the Passes tab at the bottom of the screen to add a loyalty or gift card.
2. Next, tap the blue Pass with a + sign button.
3. Next, from the pop-up window, choose either the Loyalty program or Gift card. Choose the company for your card or loyalty programme from the list of retailers and restaurants that appears.
4. If you have a gift card, you will be asked to enter the card’s information. A camera window will appear to scan your loyalty membership number for a loyalty programme. Some businesses will allow you to manually enter the numbers by tapping the enter manually button at the bottom of the screen. Some businesses, such as sandwich maker Jimmy John’s, will let you sign up for a new account if you don’t already have one.
Use Google Pay on public transportation :
You can also use Google Pay to add your transit card to your phone and use it to board trains, subways, and buses.
1. Open the Google Pay app and tap the Ride Transit button at the bottom of the home tab to add a transit card.
2. Next, choose the mode of transportation you want to use.
3. Select the blue Continue option.
4. Depending on the transit system, you may be directed to a website or app where you can purchase your tickets or passes. A small Activation window may appear from time to time. If this occurs, press the Continue button.
Wake up your phone to use a pass or ticket. Some transit systems may require you to unlock your phone and select your ticket. Hold your phone up to the card reader and wait for a blue checkmark to appear.
Google Pay and your transaction information
I was curious about the data Google collects when you use Google Pay while researching this story. I discovered that Google may use information from Google Pay transactions:
• To make Google Pay transactions easier • To display transaction details and history
• To resolve a Google Pay issue • To provide you with additional Google Pay features
And, as simple as it sounds, it’s the last one — “other Google Pay features” — that opens the door to targeted ads.
